How to Choose the Right U.S. Green Card for You

The U.S. offers several categories of green cards for foreign nationals who wish to relocate to the country. Understanding the different types of green cards can help you decide which type is right for you and your situation.

In this blog, we’ll provide an overview of the most common U.S. green card types and how they can help make your dream of living and working in America a reality.

Family-Based Green Cards

This card allows immediate family members of citizens or lawfully present residents to become legal residents of the U.S. Immediate family members include spouses, parents, children (under 21 and unmarried), and siblings.

The benefit of family-based green cards is that you can apply without finding a job. However, the wait time for this green card type can be a year or over ten years, depending on the family member.

Employment-Based Green Cards

If you have secured a job in the United States, you can opt for an employment-based green card. Your new employer must obtain a Labor Certification from the U.S. Department of Labor for you to apply for this visa.

Diversity Visa Lottery

The U.S. government annually opens a program for randomly selecting foreigners from countries with low levels of immigration to America to obtain permanent residency. To apply for this visa, you must be a citizen of one of the selected countries and have a high school education or qualified work experience.

Refugee & Asylee Green Cards

These are issued to people fleeing persecution or fear in their home countries due to religion, race, or political opinion. Refugees and asylees can apply for these green cards if granted refugee status or asylum in the United States.

Special Categories & Other Green Cards

There are other green card categories in the U.S. for those who were victims of a crime from a U.S. citizen, such as; human trafficking or domestic abuse. They can also grant a green card to special immigrants such as media professionals, religious workers, and others who have served the U.S. government under certain capacities.
